Season’s Greetings Nordic Enthusiasts!

The snow has finally begun to fall and the snow pack is inching its way down from the higher elevations.  We have trimmed brush, repaired snow fencing, serviced the equipment, purchased a new snowmobile, and await the arrival of a new Nordic ski season.  In fact, Northshore Nordic Club is about to begin its 20th year in operation!

The founding members of NSNC (all but one,  are now in our 70’s) are still repairing the equipment, doing the bookkeeping and logging grooming hours, as needed, but we’re wearing out at year twenty.  We started this club out of love for Nordic skiing with the goal of bringing quality groomed cross country skiing to the lower valley.  Judging by the sheer numbers of happy skiers on any given day on our trails, and the wonderful support they provide, we believe we’ve accomplished our mission.

NOW it’s time for the Flathead Nordic ski community to step up so we can pass the mantle of maintaining the club’s operations, and continue to provide the skiing we’ve all come to enjoy.  Management of the club includes:

  • Building and maintaining relationships with the Forest Service and Department of Natural Resources and Conservation
  • Grant writing
  • Fundraising
  • Fall trail clearing
  • Grooming
  • Maintenance and troubleshooting the equipment
  • Ordering new equipment as needed
  • Bookkeeping and payroll functions
  • Management of the day-to-day operations of Blacktail and Bigfork trails

It’s a team effort!  The Board actively manages the club’s operations and is responsible for getting it done, and all of us pitch in.

We need new people who love Nordic Skiing, are interested in the active management of our operations and want to ensure that Blacktail Mountain Nordic Trails and Bigfork Community Nordic Center remain healthy and viable for the next 20 years.  If you are willing to volunteer some time in our operations, please give Dave Hadden (406-270-3184),Steve Rosso (406-890-8566) or Don Bauder (406-250-8025) a call, and we will be happy to share our experience in the club, and answer all your questions.  Thank you.
